Neve Paritzki (נווה פריצקי)Jerusalem opens Israel's first cycling tunnel

The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's newest bicycle tunnel, has been constructed as a part of a 42-kilometer cycle route that is a loop around the capital. 
 
נווה פריצקי The tunnel is a link between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. Its southern entry is located within Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entrance, Nahal Ein Kerem, is approximately half a mile away from the Kerem junction. 
 
The opening ceremony of the tunnel, which is 2.1 kilometers long took place in Jerusalem and the Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov (Gihon water company chairman of the company) and hundreds more cyclists. 
 
Jerusalem's rich past was the main reason why it was a popular tourist destination in the past. Elkin said that, nowadays, in addition to its historical treasures, the tunnel project also includes modern tourism. "The opening of this tunnel is another element of the development of Jerusalem. The tunnel makes Jerusalem an attractive tourist place for any kind of crowd in Israel, and worldwide." 
 
Elkin, whose ministry together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, said his ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels every year in the development of Jerusalem's tourism in all its aspects and the development of exciting activities and ventures that connect the fascinating history of our capital city's eternal past to its future... I would like to invite cyclists to ride a secure and modernized route that will take you through Old Jerusalem. 
 
 
Elkin's ministry and the Tourism Ministry budgeted the project. 
 
Elkin stressed, "The Kerem Tunnel project is a key instrument for realizing our vision to change the way transportation is conducted in Jerusalem." "The tunnel, which is connected to the Jerusalem Ring Path, will join the existing cycle paths in the city and will be constructed within the different neighborhood. It is designed to encourage cycling among its residents, and also to encourage a green transportation revolution in Jerusalem." 
 
The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s to relocate its main sewer line to the Sorek purification plant. 
 
"The Kerem Tunnel project is a central tool to realize the goal of transforming Jerusalem's transportation model. "

To make the tunnel usable to the public all year round the work includes road construction, as well as installation of blowers.
