Former Senator of the Republic and ex-mayor in Bogota was able to secure the victory with the Historic Pact coalition. Officially, he is now an aspirant to the presidency, which he hopes to win for the third time.
The overwhelming turnout at the consultation has made him the most representative member of the Colombian left. He's an excellent candidate to become president despite his controversial ideas and ideas on many different fronts.
Petro declared his intention to adjust the pension system by establishing the position of a public administrator for pension funds. This would allow Petro to combine both public and private money into the form of a "mixed complementar system."
According Petro, there is no system of pensions in Colombia. However, there are bank profits. Many have said that he will end any possibility of becoming President. However, Petro recently said that he will not abolish them but would pursue reforms to pensions to create a minimum retirement age for Colombians. Petro said, however, that it was not necessary to increase the age of retirement. (Who make up the Historic Pact's list of potential candidates). Another controversial issue is that he has repeatedly stated that he'll stop oil extraction by the time the time he assumes office. This has been an issue that has created uncertainty for investors.
Experts say Petro's idea of ending oil exploration would be devastating for Colombia and cost Colombia $4.3 trillion.
The other aspect of this plan is the creation of an anti-oil movement in the region and the world to move the economy away from fossil fuels to which I would like to invite the new president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, as well as the Brazilian Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, as well as other people.
Petro has said that he spoke with the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, about his proposal.
His position on health concerns is also controversial because he insists on the end of EPS and replacing it with a proactive health model that "guarantees the rights of the people instead of the profits of bankers".
He also raised questions about the independence and legitimacy of the Banco de la Republica. Petro said that the Bank Board of Directors of the Bank was a part of the Democratic Center, a political party. "What we want, however, is an independent Bank of the Republic (...) and it appears important to us to ensure that the Board has the presence of the entire community," the candidate said in the middle of the debate.
According to Invamer, Petro leads the voting intention for the presidential election.
His idea to issue cash to fund the government's spending was a source of controversy.
