Gustavo Petro, Winner of the Historic Pact: Lights and Shadows Candidate Gustavo Petro confirmed on Sunday the favoritism that the polls had been marking for a few weeks. (Positions of those who are candidates (Positions of candidates Historic Pact to Pensions and Inflation). The former Bogota mayor Bogota and former senator of the Republic managed to win the victory within the Historic Pact coalition and officially is now a candidate for the presidency of the Republic the United States, a position to which he is aspiring for the third time. His high vote at the meeting makes him the most representative of the Colombian Left and is a strong candidate for the presidency, despite controversial proposals and ideas on multiple fronts, including the economic one. Petro announced his plans to reform the pension system by the creation of a public manager of the pension fund. The system is expected to be "mixed" and will complement the private funds. The candidate said that Colombia does not have a retirement system, but instead a system that makes bank profits. Many believe this would stop the candidate from becoming president. But, Petro recently said that he would not eliminate them but would seek pension reform to achieve a minimum pension for Colombians. https://www.washingtonpost.com/es/post-opinion/2022/04/19/elecciones-colombia-2022-gustavo-petro-juan-fernando-petro-perdon/ He has also said that there is "no need" to raise the age of retirement. (Who comprise the list of contenders to be part of the Historic Pact). Another thing that has been criticized concerning him is the fact that he frequently promises that he will cease oil extraction when he assumes his office. This has led to anxiety among investors as well as the market. https://cnnespanol.cnn.com/2022/05/29/gustavo-petro-guerrillero-m-19-historia-orix-2/ Experts estimate that Petro's plan to end exploration for oil in Colombia will result in a cost of around $4.3 billion. Furthermore, this plan would create an antioil front in the region and the globe that shifts the economy away from fossil fuels. In this regard I'd like to invite Gabriel Boric the Chilean president and LuizInacio Lula Silva, the Brazilian president. Petro claimed that he talked with Pedro Sanchez, the Prime Minister of Spain about his proposal. https://www.elcolombiano.com/colombia/politica/petro-dice-que-en-su-gobierno-si-extraditaria-a-piedad-cordoba-NF17568612 https://www.eltiempo.com/bogota/luis-ernesto-gomez-reacciones-por-su-llegada-a-campana-de-gustavo-petro-674840 His position regarding health concerns is also controversial. He has insistent on the end of EPS and replacing it with a model of prevention which "guarantees all rights of the people, not the profits of bankers". He also raised questions regarding the legitimacy and independence of the Banco de la Republica. Petro claims that the Bank's Board of Directors is part of a political organization known as the Democratic Center. Therefore, Petro says, "What we want" is an independent Bank of the Republic (...). The candidate made this in the middle of an argument. (Petro leads voting intention in the presidential elections (according to Invamer). https://americasquarterly.org/fulltextarticle/quien-le-teme-a-gustavo-petro/ It was a controversial idea that he suggested issuing cash to fund government spending. Petro's plans concentrate on a sustainable economy which doesn't rely on fossil fuels. It is also mentioned that he will propose an overhaul of the tax system that would eliminate exemptions as well as the replacement of the concept of minimum wages to a real-time wage based on capital and income.
