Even Faith managed to keep her mouth shut until Hifumi had been dropped off. As Natsuo drove away and his house faded into the distance, though, she could hold back no longer. "What did you get her?"
Hailey shrugged. "A crocheting book. I annotated it."
Edie gasped, scandalized. "That's more effort than you've ever put into our gifts."
"You literally just tell me what you want for your birthdays and I get you those things," Hailey retorted. "This is how we've done it since, like, elementary school." She kneaded her temples. "Fuck, I'm tired. Thinking of presents is difficult."
"Especially for someone like Sagara," Minnie mumbled.
"I'm just, like, still getting over what just happened," Max said, her tone coloured with disbelieving amusement. "We're not going to add her to the groupchat, are we?"
"I'm not going to do it," Faith said immediately.
"What? No. You're my oldest friends."
The car was silent for a few long moments. Natsuo stopped at a red light.
"Takeda really is good for you," Minnie said, eventually. "You're getting less emotionally constipated."
Hailey flipped her off.
"You know," Faith said, thoughtfully, "I think I could set up a groupchat for the class. It wouldn't even be difficult."
"I don't know if I'd be comfortable entrusting Myoga with my number."
"Same."
"Yeah."
"Mm-hmm."
"Oh, right." Faith locked her phone. "Yeah. True."
As they got out of the car, Edie piped up. "Does this mean we all have to get her a present too?"
"I don't know if I'm, like, capable of that kind of effort."
"It'd probably be a bad idea if I offered to spruce up her apartment, right?"
"Probably just going to get her a power bank."
"I'm going to give her a box of homemade gimbap," Faith blurted.
"Didn't know you hated Sagara that much."
"Maybe tell her that it's made for cats so she runs it past her pet first."
"But what if it kills the cat? She'll fucking slaughter us."
"I can't BUY gimbap, it's not sincere enough!"
"Get her, like, a voucher for gimbap."
"That's patronizing!"
They entered Hailey's apartment without missing a beat. "Okay, I'LL give her gimbap," Minnie said. "You give her a power bank. But, like, make some tweaks to it, like, I dunno, solar panels or something?"
"What if it blows up?"
"Why do you keep assuming that stuff I make is going to blow up?"
"Because you literally burned my eyebrows off in seventh grade?"
Faith rolled her eyes but acknowledged the point. The conversation hit a lull as Max ordered pizza.
"Clothes would be nice," Edie said thoughtfully. "I think she'd like some clothes. With, like, openings? For her quirk? I sort of saw how it worked during the exercise."
"This is all hypothetical, right?" Max interrupted. "Because I was trying to think of something but kept getting sidetracked by the possibility that all this," she gestured vaguely, "is going to happen again."
Edie looked at Hailey. "Who's next?" she drawled.
"What the hell do you mean, who's next?"
"Are you going to, like, try to befriend Kyoda next? Or Owari? Or that girl behind us, the - ah, I forgot her name again -"
"Hoge." Faith went white. "Oh, God forbid, Suzuki?"
Hailey made a face. "I'm not that far gone yet."
