Neve Paritzki (נווה פריצקי)Jerusalem inaugurates Israel's first cycle tunnel

The Kerem Tunnel is a great spot to hike and ride. 
 
The Kerem Tunnel is the first cycle tunnel to be constructed in Israel and was opened as a part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs around the capital. 
 
The tunnel is located through the Nahal-Refaim-Emek-Motza path. It is located in southern Israel in Refaim Park. נווה פריצקי Ein Laban is the nearest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance. 
 
The 2.1-kilometer-long tunnel was officially inaugurated by Jerusalem's Heritage Minister ZeevElkin. The ceremony was also attended by Mayor Moshelion Avi Balehnikov, Gihon Water Company chairman, as well as hundreds of cyclists. 
 
Jerusalem was once a popular tourist attraction due to its rich past. Elkin added that in addition to its historical treasures the modern tourist industry is incorporated into the city of Jerusalem. "The opening of this tunnel project is yet another step in the development of Jerusalem as a tourist destination for all kinds of travelers throughout Israel and all over the world." 
 
Elkin, whose ministry was responsible for the project, along with Jerusalem Municipality stated that his ministry has invested thousands of shekels annually in the city's tourism development and also in the creation of new ventures and attractions that will connect the magnificent historic past with the the future of Jerusalem. I encourage all cyclists to take a trip and enjoy the contemporary, well-maintained road that takes in the view of Old Jerusalem. 
 
The project was financed by the Elkin's Ministry and the Tourism Ministry. It also included budgets for Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority. 
 
Elkin stressed the fact that "The Kerem Tunnel Project is a central tool to realize the vision to redefine the idea of transport in Jerusalem." "The new tunnel, which will connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path, will connect with existing cycle paths in the city and will be constructed within the different neighborhoods. It is designed to encourage bicycling within the city's residents and also to encourage an environmentally sustainable transportation system in Jerusalem." 
 
The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s to relocate the main sewer line toward the Sorek purification plant.

The work currently in progress includes road construction, the installation of blowers, as well as advanced electrical and safety systems, in order to ensure that the tunnel is secure for pedestrians to travel through at all times of the year. 
 
The Kerem Tunnel provides access to unique recreation locations, including Ein Kerem neighbourhood, the biblical aquarium and zoo as well the historic natural springs Ein Haniyeh, Ein Laban and Ein Haniyeh.
