Let me just also say that this group featured a lot of self-inserts and fetishing over a 'human-to-Inkling' sub-plot I was going with. Let's just say, I was really salty when I read a story from somewhere I forget where where they wrote a story that basically went 'Boy gets excited, plays the new Splatoon game, Captain N's his way into the TV, suddenly he's an Inkling and he's not surprised and gets to stuff immediately.' 
 
This very much annoyed the crap out of me because of the suspension of disbelief required, which I wanted to change. I also wanted to throw a different plot in there about Serena coming from the past, getting warped to a different dimension and then she finds Helen and then they keep a secret from everyone that they remember their 'lives' in the wiped dimension, a concept taken from the Archie Sonic reboot where since they rebooted the universe because a dozen things flew at the wall, they decided to let old fans in on the fact the characters themselves remembered the old timeline... for a few panels before it was promptly forgotten by everyone in the cast rendering it a pointless addition anyway. 
 
Helen was meant to tell Azure in the last stretch of the 'first' story about the alternate timeline and its existence being all mysterious n crap. It was supposed to play in the story later. All of this is being retconned because I don't like the idea of Serena, Trevor and the rest of the characters as self-inserts, and I have a better idea for that type of plot later down the line which I do like the script for. But these guys if they do appear will be regular Inklings. 
 
Serena was meant to be a self-insert of myself, which I gave her 'surname' elements of my own to make extremely obvious to anyone who knew me, Trevor was an experiment back when we still had 20 pieces of gear in Gmod of me messing around with Inklings on a TF2 map. Kevin, Ruby, Mauve, Elliot and the pictured 6 who were all there were all meant to be extensions of the 'human-to-Inkling' plot where it went out of control and they were all stuck there. All of their appearances were me trying to mess with my own gear pack and the eye packs of others to create 'unique' Inklings. Serena and Trevor were meant to be attached to Helen and Xolo since those latter two were hinted as having a relationship later in life... Helen herself being a self-insert of my first set in Splatoon where I thought 'this would look good in marigold' and then found out about the colour differences from there. Luckily for the Splatoon team, it's mostly hidden, the differences, in the sequels.
 
Helen, Xolo, Barbara, Elli and Bunni were all meant to be 'the regular' Turf War team. Featuring regular Inklings within the orange/blue colour range. Helen was a pure self-insert, even down to the fact originally she was going to be Agent 3 because of the sneaky biz thinking and all that. 
 
But then that got messy because I wasn't sure how much the Hero Modes were going to play a role and then she gained way too much self-importance. There were supposed to be like 3 Agent 3's (yes bear with me here) where one would have 'gone through Octo Valley' 2 years before the main campaign, and then Helen goes through the main campaign, and then gets ambushed at the end with Octavio having a 'stronger attack,' since he'd already been prepared from two years prior, and then Club Ink, who'd been following Helen, would jump out and strength in numbers, Callie and Marie would still sing and Octavio would then be defeated. Then they'd live normal lives because I didn't know Splatoon 2's story would try and make gent 3 into this edgy rival superior character which'd work more so for the previous character than it would Helen, but then that character would've already participated in the Splatoon 2 Hero campaign (since in my fanon they don't happen at the same time since I like to incorporate the updates in the timeline of the fanon, which, it's very clear the hero campaign was supposed to happen first), and was done with exploring after that incident due to just losing it over time, which wouldn't make sense. And then there was a giant hole that the 'new' Agent 3 happened offscreen after Helen and crew and it got really messy. To specifically Helen's case, she was supposed to be Agent 3 because her clothing set is the same set I had just after clearing Octo Valley. It changed multiple times afterwards.
 
Elli, Bunni and Barbara were promo Inklings. Bunni was based on the fact they were gonna be rabbits (the Inklings), and she was meant to be hyper and excitable. Her defining trait was her love for Tentatek-branded gear, to the point she would only wear their gear. There wasn't much outside of that. Elli was her older sister, and she and Barbara were meant to be 'old friends' that knew each other before Turf War and before Bunni gained control over her two forms. Barbara if you had to describe her was more shy and docile, think Marina but less obvious. Elli contrastingly would've fit with the 'edgy, serious' image. No-nonsense, and wanted to get on with the job. Of the hierarchy of girls she'd be next behind Helen in the leadership, with Bunni being the excitable new kid at the bottom.
 
Xolo at the end is a bit of a conglomerate of the previous 3 girls, not too serious, but not too bubbly either. The way I characterised most of my boys, he was meant to be the reverse Amy Rose of the story, where he'd tease a relationship with Helen, but he wouldn't actually commit while she'd tease him back which later in life would result in the two being together. Both were given their 'human' companion to further this connection. It wasn't meant to evolve in my stories beyond light teasing but in terms of the happily ever after ending that's where it'd end up.

Outside of a minor role in a future story where Bunni and Elli can help set off a chain reaction, as characters in their original plots, this is being retconned in its entirety. They're just regular Inklings with no agent or human baggage.
